FINA bans Transgender Athletes:

International Swimming Federation (FINA, Fédération Internationale de Natation) bans transgender athletes.

FINA is an international management organisation for swimming events recognised by the International Olympic Committee

The rationale behind this ban was that no woman could compete with men with traits that had higher testosterone levels.

FINA is now going to create a separate category for transgender swimmers, in which Thomas can participate.

A transgender woman can only take part in a women's swimming competition if she has completed all biological changes by the age of 12.

Transgenders must also prove that they are consistently lowering their testosterone levels under the new rules.

The International Olympic Committee argued that no woman could compete with a man with a trait that had higher testosterone levels.

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) has decided to ban American transgender swimmer Lia Thomas.

Lia Thomas was the first transgender swimmer to become the women's 500 yard freestyle champion earlier this year.
